The Pacific Community (SPC) is the principal scientific and technical organisation in the Pacific region, supporting development since 1947. We are an international development organisation owned and governed by our 27 country and territory members. We are known for our knowledge and innovation in such areas as fisheries science, public health surveillance, geoscience, and conservation of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture.

 

The Division – Climate Change and Environmental Sustainability Programme (CCES) was established to support SPC in strengthening and streamlining its climate change initiatives by consolidating the existing climate change work of SPC under strategic and technical management. In addition, CCES provides leadership in SPC’s climate change and environmental sustainability actions, coordinates and liaises with regional and international partners coherently for the organisation and enhances mainstreaming of the issue within its divisional development work.

 

The role – Communications Assistant will provide communication support to the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDC) Hub and broader Climate Change action in the valorisation of all SPC climate change related activities, in order to ensure visibility of the Climate Change activities and results and to support countries in communication actions on key work.

 

The key responsibilities of the role include:

Website Management

  • Manage the website content management system in line with SPC organisational approaches and SOPs.
  • Serve as the contact point to facilitate the visibility of divisional communication materials on the website pages.
  • Monitor audience traffic patterns and suggest innovations to improve the functionality and reach audience in line with SPC reporting and organisational knowledge management systems.

 

Social Media Management  

  • Assist in the creation of engaging original content for each platform (#Throwback, #FastFact, infographics, images, audio, video etc.).
  • Using the Communications strategy, ensure that social media content is consistent (look and messaging).
  • Provide regular monitoring of NDC content on social media and website traffic patterns and audience growth and where possible propose ways to make the NDC Hub/CCES’ presence and engagement more effective.

 

Communications Writing

  • Ensure correct tagging on all platforms to extract appropriate reports and provide media reporting to centralized SPC communication reporting templates and NDC team.
  • Prepare press releases, media alerts, and other media engagement products in line with SPC SOPs and protocols.
  • In cooperation with other NDC Hub and broader CCES teams, the Communication Assistant will assist in the research, drafting and editing of short stories, OpEds, Blogs and other material for use on the CCES website and social media platforms.
  • Provide photography support for NDC Hub activities and upload content to SPC’s Resource Space Photo Library with correct NDC tagging for access.

Key selection criteria

 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in a relevant field such as communications, website development, marketing, media relations, journalism or equivalent body of knowledge and experience.

 

Technical expertise

  • 2 years of experience in the communications field, preferably in international development or international relations or an equivalent body of knowledge and experience.
  • Experience of working with communications, media or journalism as well as online communities of practice.
  • Experience working with website Content Management Systems.
  • Experience with intranets and communities of practice.
  • Fluent with all major social media platforms.

 

Language skills

  • Excellent English communication skills (oral and written).

 

Interpersonal skills and cultural awareness

  • Ability to work in a multicultural, inclusive and equitable environment.

 

 

Salary, terms and conditions

 

Contract Duration Until 28 February 2026 .

 

Remuneration – The Communications Assistant is a band 6 position in SPC’s 2025 salary scale, with a commencing taxable salary range of FJD 1,987-2,483 per month, plus local staff benefits. An offer of appointment for an initial contract will normally be made in the lower half of this range, with due consideration given to experience and qualifications. Progression within the salary scale will be based on annual performance reviews.

 

Benefits – SPC provides medical and life insurance for eligible employees only. Employees are entitled to 25 working days of annual leave per annum and other types of leave, prorated on contract length, and access to SPC’s Provident Fund (contributing 8% of salary, to which SPC adds a 10% contribution).
