Summary

An assistant teacher must maintain a safe, healthy, and nurturing learning environment. Advance children’s physical and intellectual competence. Supports each child’s social and emotional development and provides positive guidance. Establishes positive and effective family relations. Ensures an effective program; Responds to children’s needs; Maintains professional commitment. Additionally, assistant teachers are responsible for working with the lead teacher to implement their lesson plans.

Duties

Daily Care & Supervision

  • Maintain constant supervision and ensure the safety of all infants at all times
  • Change diapers frequently and according to schedule, while documenting each change
  • Feed infants bottles or solid foods as appropriate, following each child’s individual schedule
  • Assist in putting babies down for naps and maintain a calm, soothing environment
  • Monitor infants' developmental milestones and report any concerns to the lead teacher

Learning & Play Engagement

  • Engage infants in age-appropriate sensory activities (tummy time, singing, reading, etc.)
  • Rotate toys regularly to keep infants engaged and support motor and cognitive development
  • Ensure that infant curriculum goals are being supported through play

Classroom Environment

  • Help maintain a clean, sanitized, and organized classroom (toys, surfaces, cribs, etc.)
  • Follow and support hourly sanitation schedules
  • Assist in creating and updating the classroom’s student board with energy and detail
  • Decorate learning spaces with colorful, educational materials (shapes, colors, animal pics, etc.)

Support to Lead Teacher

  • Assist with classroom transitions and routines (arrival, playtime, meals, nap, etc.)
  • Follow the lead teacher’s instructions and support classroom plans or schedules
  • Communicate effectively with lead teacher about infant needs, incidents, or concerns

Documentation & Communication

  • Take daily photos or quick videos of learning moments for parent updates
  • Ensure accurate daily logs (feeding, diapering, sleep times, and activities)
  • Support documentation of developmental progress for portfolios or parent-teacher meetings

Safety & Cleanliness

  • Monitor infants on changing table area to prevent unsafe behavior
  • Sanitize cribs, toys, mats, and high-touch surfaces regularly
  • Adhere to health and safety guidelines set by the center and licensing agency
Schedule & Dismissal
  • Begin preparing infants for dismissal between 3:00 to 5:30 p.m.
  • Ensure all belongings are packed and diaper bags are restocked for home
  • Greet and communicate positively with parents during pickup

Requirements

Education & Certification

  • High school diploma or GED (required)

Skills & Knowledge

  • Understanding of infant development and basic care routines
  • Familiarity with safe sleep practices and sanitation protocols
  • Ability to follow lesson plans and engage infants in developmentally appropriate play
  • Clear and respectful communication with coworkers and parents

Physical & Emotional Demands

  • Ability to lift up to 30 lbs regularly (infants, equipment, etc.)
  • Comfortable with bending, squatting, sitting on the floor, and standing for extended periods
  • Patience, nurturing attitude, and positive energy in a fast-paced environment

Availability & Reliability

  • Consistent attendance and punctuality
  • Flexibility to work scheduled shifts, including potential support during staff absences
  • Willingness to participate in ongoing professional development

Professionalism & Compliance

  • Adherence to CIA policies and procedures
  • Willingness to complete background checks and fingerprint clearance
  • Respect for confidentiality and sensitivity to each child’s and family’s need
