Job Description

The Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology is seeking an experimental research associate (Life Science Research Professional 1) for a 1 year fixed term to join the Khan (YAK) Laboratory at Stanford University. The Khan Lab investigates RNA folding, RNA-protein interactions, and their cellular consequences using a highly interdisciplinary approach that integrates biochemistry, structural biology (cryo-EM/ET), and machine learning. The ideal candidate will join the team in September 2025 or shortly thereafter.

Lab overview

Cells rely on RNAs that adopt specific structures, engage proteins and other macromolecules, and regulate processes across viral and cellular contexts. The YAK Lab develops and applies biochemical and structural methods alongside computational/ML models to reveal the principles governing RNA structure, assembly, and function in cells and pathogens. Our research spans molecular mechanisms to cellular processes with applications to both basic science and human health.

Job description

We seek an enthusiastic, creative lab manager/research associate to help establish laboratory procedures, drive experimental projects on RNA structure and RNA-protein complexes, and support day-to-day operations of a growing group.

Representative projects may include:

• Reconstitution and biochemical/biophysical characterization of RNA-protein complexes.
Sample preparation for cryo-EM/ET of RNA and RNP assemblies in vitro and (where appropriate) in cells.
• Cell-based assays to test how RNA structure and RBP interactions influence phenotypes in viral and cellular systems.
• Coordinating with computational collaborators to integrate ML predictions with experimental design and validation.

Qualifications

• Experience with molecular and cell biology techniques; strong preference for RNA biochemistry (e.g., in vitro transcription, RNA handling, nuclease assays) and/or protein purification .
• Experience with electron microscopy (cryo-EM/ET) workflows and/or structural biology is a plus.
• Familiarity with quantitative data analysis; comfort collaborating with ML/comp teams is welcome.
• High initiative, strong organization and time-management, excellent communication, and a collaborative mindset.
• Prior lab management experience (safety, inventory, ordering, equipment maintenance) is highly desirable.

Duties include

• Plan approaches to experiments in support of lab research based on knowledge of scientific theory.
• Independently conduct experiments; maintain detailed records of procedures, data, and outcomes.
• Apply life-science methods to analyze results; recommend protocol optimizations in collaboration with senior researchers.
• Stay current with the literature and apply relevant advances to ongoing projects.
• Contribute to publications and assist with figures, methods, presentations, and proposals.
• Help with general lab maintenance; maintain lab stock, manage chemical inventory and safety records, and provide general lab support.
• Assist with orientation and training of new staff or students on lab procedures and techniques.

- Other duties may also be assigned.

The expected pay range for this position is $31.40 to $38.89 per hour.
Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
