Job Description



Functioning under minimal supervision, the Peer Recovery Coach provides non-clinical services intended to aid patients in establishing recovery from high risk of dependent alcohol and drug use problems. The Peer Recovery Coach will work as part of the Emergency Department team to provide peer support and motivation to encourage patients who are seeking treatment for alcohol or drug dependency and addiction issues. The Peer Recovery Coach will assist in completing referrals to treatment services and developing service plans to promote successful linkage to treatment services. Services will be provided in the Emergency Department with appropriate follow-up.

Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

  • Demonstrated excellent interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to relate to patients and health professionals.
  • Ability to develop professional working relationships with partner agencies.
  • Ability to read, interpret documents and write routine reports.
  • Basic computer skills are required.
  • Demonstrated patience and tact when dealing with patients, families, and other staff, to integrate Continuous Quality Improvement principles for service and organization work improvements.
  • Ability to work with people of all social, economic, and cultural backgrounds; be flexible, open-minded and adaptable to change.
  • Ability to develop collaborative relationships with physicians, families, patients, interdisciplinary team and other community agencies.
  • Demonstrated willingness to learn and an interest in acquiring new skills.
  • The ability to ensure the confidentiality and rights of all patient and departmental documents is required.

Qualifications



To quality for this position, the candidate must have a high school diploma or equivalent; The candidate must be actively engaged in his/her own recovery program with a minimum of three years demonstrated personal recovery and sustained abstinence from alcohol and/or drug use.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Peer Recovery Coach practices, with individuals, family and in group settings.
  • The incumbent must be able to read, interpret documents and write routine reports. Basic computer skills are required.
  • The Peer Recovery Coach must demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills, the ability to relate to patients and health professionals, as well as good problem-solving skills. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate a willingness to learn and an interest in acquiring new skills.
  • Chart documentation, community referrals, and effective networking techniques to coordinate services for patients outside of the hospital.
  • Ability to demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the patient population(s) served.

Patient Safety

Ensures patient safety in the performance of job functions and through participation in hospital, department or unit patient safety initiatives.

  • Takes action to correct observed risks to patient safety.
  • Reports adverse events and near misses to appropriate management authority.
  • Identifies possible risks in processes, procedures, devices and communicates the same to those in charge.

Additional Information



This position is for evening shift from 3 pm to 11:30 pm Monday through Friday.
