What’s the role?

As a Senior Machine Learning Engineer on Etsy’s Search Ranking Team, you will play a pivotal role in developing and optimizing algorithms that determine the relevance and ranking of listings in our search engine. You will use advanced machine learning techniques to analyze user behavior, item attributes, and contextual data to ensure that buyers find the most relevant products have delightful shopping experience. This role involves collaborating closely with fellow machine learning engineers, applied scientists, product managers, and analytics partners to drive data-driven decisions and implement scalable solutions that enhance the search experience.

This is a full-time position reporting to the Engineering Manager. In addition to salary, you will also be eligible for an equity package, an annual performance bonus, and our that support you and your family as part of your total rewards package at Etsy.

For this role, we are considering candidates based in the United States. Candidates living within commutable distance of Etsy’s Brooklyn Office Hub or in the San Francisco Bay Area may be the first to be considered. For candidates within commutable distance, Etsy requires in-office attendance once or twice per week depending on your proximity to the office. The Search Ranking Team is a dynamic and collaborative group of passionate individuals dedicated to improving how buyers discover unique items on Etsy. Our responsibilities include:

• Designing, building and maintaining the ranking systems that power Etsy Search.

• Using innovative machine learning models in representation learning, natural language modeling, and computer visions to improve search relevance.

• Monitoring ecosystem signals and optimizing for long-term marketplace health.

What does the day-to-day look like?

• You will work in a cross-functional team to prioritize and lead projects which help achieve our product targets.

• You will conduct applied ML research to identify the latest models or build custom architectures to improve search system.

• You will prototype, optimize, and productionize scalable ML models in the production framework.

• You will perform both offline and online experiments to verify your solutions.

• You will optimize the ML models and systems to ensure high efficiency, scalability, and observability.

• You will mentor junior team members to help them produce high-quality machine learning solutions.

Qualities that will help you thrive in this role are:

• 5+ years of industry experience, preferably in search, ads, recommendation, or related areas, or a PhD degree in ML related field with 3+ years of industry experience.

• Experience in training, deploying, monitoring, debugging, and iterating on scalable production systems in relevant machine learning fields, such as information retrieval, learning to rank, representation learnings, user modeling and personalization, natural language processing, and computer vision.

• Experience in successfully taking projects from design to delivery, both independently and as part of a team.

• Proficiency in Python and experience with ML frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch.

• Strong engineering and coding skills, with the ability to write high quality production code. Proficiency in Python, Scala, Java and/or other equivalent languages.

• Experience with web-scale data preprocessing and ML workflow such as Apache Spark, Beam, Airflow, Kubeflow Pipelines… etc.

• Capability of collaborating and communicating effectively with teammates and cross-functional partners.
